Fix ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED on Inspiron 17

My Dell Inspiron 17 laptop starting giving regular ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED errors when I switched from ADSL2+ via Exetel to NBN via iiNet.

Note that this error only occurs when using a LAN cable to directly connect the laptop to the gateway. The error doesn’t happen if connected via Wi-Fi.

It seems that the issue is due to an incompatibility between the Realtek network adapter in my laptop and the Technicolor TG-789 Broadband Gateway device provided by iiNet. Specifically, it seems that the TG-789 doesn’t support the “Energy Efficient Ethernet” protocol used by the Realtek network adapter.

To fix (on Windows 10):

  1. Press <Windows>+X
  2. Click on Device Manager
  3. Under Network adapters, right-click Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller and click Properties
  4. In the Advanced tab, click on Energy Efficient Ethernet and change the value to Disabled
  5. Click [OK] and close the device manager
